Frequently Asked

Does a Midwife do everything a doctor can do?

During the prenatal and postpartum process, you can expect the midwife to do many things that a doctor would, such as take vitals, listen to heart tones, answer questions, and measure baby.

If something comes up during labor, midwives are trained to recognize problems and take appropriate action.

While midwives are licensed, independent providers, we work as a team with our doctor colleagues to ensure our patients receive safe care.

Will my midwife be able to run the same tests as an OBGYN office?

Midwives recommend and order the same prenatal testing, genetic screening, and ultrasounds as doctors do during pregnancy. We can order many common medicines including prenatal vitamins, allergy medicine, birth control, and antibiotics. Midwives perform Pap smears and place contraceptive implants. Primarily, you’ll notice one main difference during exams, which is that we spend considerable time educating you about your body and any changes you’re experiencing. We will help you navigate through what is coming and common concerns at your stage. We are strong advocates for informed consent and decision making.

Will I be offered resources throughout my pregnancy?

The wonderful thing about choosing Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Center is that we have a community of trusted providers and resources to help you with any and all needs throughout pregnancy and parenthood.

We have cultivated strong relationships with these community members, and many will come to the wellness center in order to provide the care you need.

Is an out of hospital birth safe?

Birth is a normal physiological process and healthy women generally have great outcomes. One of the top reasons for success is that midwives have the flexibility to be patient and wait for the woman to give birth at her own pace. While monitoring mom and baby, and ensuring that everyone stays healthy, having the patience to allow the labor to progress at its own pace will reduce many risks for complications. Many interventions in hospitals actually lead to higher c-section rates and some of these happen because doctors and nurses try to speed up the process before things are ready.

Do you do water births?

Absolutely! We often see that laboring in a tub can provide significant counter pressure and can be a relief during contractions. Some women desire to birth in the tub, others only want to labor in and out of the tub. We support whatever you want to do.

For home births we have a list of resources on how to acquire a birthing tub should you need one.

Will you care for my newborn?

Midwives can care for healthy newborns for up to 6 weeks. We can provide bilirubin checks, weight checks, and breastfeeding management.

We do recommend choosing a pediatrician prior to birth, but in general their first appointment with them isn’t necessary until after 6 weeks of age.

What if something goes wrong during birth?

Part of the prenatal process is ensuring you and your baby are healthy throughout pregnancy. This means you will likely go on to have a beautiful birth in the way that you choose. As midwives, we are trained to recognize signs of complications as they arise, and we carry supplies and equipment for handling the most common complications of childbirth.

Should the need to go to the hospital arise, we will stay with you and advocate for you at the hospital. Most of the time, when a transport is necessary, it isn’t an emergency situation, and we go in private cars together to the hospital.
